Nitrate is a major nutrient and is often used to measure the water
quality prior to abstraction. It may also be used to define the
Total Nitrogen balance of an aquatic environment. In agricultural
regions, surface water runoff entering rivers and lakes may be significantly
high in Nitrate. Treatment may therefore be needed to ensure compliance
to drinking water directives. Additionally some effluents may also
have Nitrate consents imposed on site discharge.
